Jasikan residents almost lynch 3 Togolese soldiers

Three Togolese soldiers were on New Year’s Day rescued by the Volta Regional Police Command in Ghana’s Volta Region after the locals attacked them.

The soldiers had entered Ghana without any notification to the country’s security, ostensibly to arrest a fugitive dissident.

The soldiers entered a village called Amoako in the Jasikan District to effect the arrest of the dissident who is wanted in Togo.

The locals were not enthused by the actions of the soldiers and sieged them. They arrested three of them and tied one to a tree.

Volta Regional Police Commander, Francis Ebenezer Doku told the Ghanaian media that the other five soldiers fled back home.

The three who were arrested by the locals were rescued upon the intervention of the Jasikan Police command and the DCE for Jasikan, Mr Aziale.

They were handed over to their Togolese unit commander, who had traced them to the Jasikan Police Station.

According to DCOP Ebenezer Doku, he has informed the Ghana Office of Interpol to get their Togolese counterparts to observe the UN Convention on the arrest of citizens outside their sovereign state.
