Police have charged the four persons who were arrested by the Airport District Police Command in the Ashanti Region over the death one Naomi Opoku, 37, with rape and conspiracy to rape.
The suspects are Margret Aborah, 60; Emmanuel Afriyie, 36 and two other juveniles whose names have been withheld.
The four were arrested over rape to death of Naomi Opoku, a plantain chips seller at Buokrom in Kumasi.
According to the Regional Deputy Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Godwin Ahianyo, preliminary investigations established that on 28 December 2018, the deceased was hawking and went to a drinking bar which belongs to suspect Margret Aborah in the state of drunkenness. The deceased ordered the granddaughter of suspect Margret to serve her with three tots of local gin popularly called ‘akpeteshie’.
The Police PRO told Adehye FM’s Elisha Adarkwah that the deceased after taking the liquor became unconscious and on the orders of suspect Margret, two juvenile suspects who are her grandsons carried the deceased into one of their rooms ostensibly to let her rest for a while to regain consciousness.
Suspect Emmanuel Afriyie who was also sitting at the drinking bar, having taken some tots of the local gin, saw the deceased being carried to the room by the two juveniles.
Suspect Afriyie later sneaked into the room where the deceased had been sent and took advantage of her condition and had sexual intercourse with her.
The two juveniles had information on suspect Afriyie’s act and quickly followed up to the room and caught him in the act but looked on amidst giggling.
Suspect Margret was informed about the conduct of suspect Emmanuel Afriyie but failed to act and left the deceased to her fate until 29 December 2018 at about 5:30am when she passed away.
Suspect Margret Aborah and her two grandsons later went to the room of the deceased and found her dead.
The 60-year-old suspect conspired with her grandsons, carried the lifeless body of Naomi and dumped her on the street about 100 meters from the drinking bar.
The Buokrom police was informed about the incident and quickly caused the arrest of all four suspects.
All the suspects are currently in the custody assisting in investigations. Meanwhile, the body of the deceased has been deposited at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital for autopsy.
