Mental health day: “wee” smoking our major challenge – Dr. Bernaku

Smoking of marijuana, locally termed as “wee” has been identified as the major cause of mental health among the youth in the Bono, Bono East and Ahafo regions.

Executive Director of the Coalition of NGO’s in health, Dr. Gabriel Bernaku speaking to Akua Nyarko Abronoma host of Dinpa anopa bosuo on a Sunyani based Dinpa 91.3FM said, drug abuse especially the abuse of tramadol has also become a major problem in fighting the menace.

He was speaking as part of the 2019 World Mental health day.

World Mental Health Day is observed across the world on October 10. The day aims to raise awareness regarding mental health issues and mobilize efforts to support mental health. 

The theme for World mental health day 2019 is “suicide prevention”.

Dr. Bernaku touching on the theme said, someone commits suicide in every 40seconds adding that about 1,500 deaths are recorded in Ghana per annum through suicide with 35% being students.

He noted that “everyone is at risk of committing suicide, we should be each others keeper”.

He called on Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) to integrate mental health financing in their developmental plan as the issue of mental health has come to stay .

He called on the Bono regional Minister, Hon. Mrs. Evelyn Ama Kumi Richardson, the MCE of Sunyani Hon. Mrs. Justina Owusu Banahene and all other stakeholders to help clear the streets of Sunyani of mentally challenge persons who have taken over the city .

Mr. Bernaku hinted of lack of logistics as one of the problem confronting mental health personnel in the region.
